Macbeth

Macbeth

“Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare. It is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies. Set in Scotland, the play dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power.” The quest for power brings out the worst in others; innocent people can be hurt in the crossfire because of their greed. In Macbeth, a playwright written by William Shakespeare, this is very evident. Several deaths and tragedies occur because of the constant power struggle between those who want to control the kingdom of Scotland.
In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth and Banquo meet three witches on their way home from fighting a rebellion. The women prophesy that Macbeth will be Thane of Cawdor and then become King of Scotland, while Banquo’s heirs shall be kings. Lady Macbeth hears news from her husband of the prophecy and his new title; she vows to help him become king. While everyone is sleeping and after his wife has given the guards drugged wine, Macbeth kills the King and his guards. Macduff arrives and when the murder is discovered Duncan’s sons flee fearing for their lives, but they are blamed for the murder. Macbeth arranges for Banquo and his son, Fleance to be killed, but the boy escapes the murderers. At a banquet Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo. Macbeth seeks out the witches and learns from them that he will be safe until Birnam Wood comes to his castle, Dunsinane. They tell him that he should not fear anyone born of woman, but also that the Scottish succession will come from Banquo’s son. Macduff’s family is murdered, while Macduff himself has gone to join Malcolm at the court of the English king, Edward. Malcolm’s army is carrying branches from the forest as camouflage for their attack on the castle. Lady Macbeth, filled with guilt, walks in her sleep and gives away her secrets to a doctor. Macduff challenges Macbeth, learning his enemy was born by Cesarean section, realizes he is not stanchless. Macduff wins and brings the head of Macbeth to Malcolm who declares peace and is crowned king.
Death cannot be avoided when greed is the motivator. In Act 2, Scene 2, Lines 76-77, it says, “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood. Clean from my hand?” Macbeth coveted for power causing him to kill Duncan. Here he feels guilty because of his greed and how he rues the way he took Duncan’s life even though he did not deserve it. In Act 5, Scene 1, Lines 31-36 the text reads, “Out damned spot! Out I say…who would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him?” Lady Macbeth is overflowing with dismay because of her role in Duncan and the guards’ death. Once again we see that death was inevitable because Lady Macbeth wanted her husband to become king. Blood is theoretically all over her which causes her to go mad. In Act 4, Scene 2, Lines 93-94, the story says, “He has killed me, mother. Run away, I pray you!” Macbeth orders assassins to kill Macduff’s family hoping he would be there. Since Macbeth’s greed, controlling his judgment, innocent people died in the crossfire. The innocent family did not deserve this. Unfortunately, Macbeth’s lust for power got the best of him and the man he tried killing did not even get killed. People die and are injured because of others hunger for power.
The struggle for power can cause great conflict amongst those who want it most. In Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 11-15, it reads, “The merciless Macdomwal-worthy to be a rebel, for to that the multiplying villanies of nature do swarm upon him-from the Western Isles of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied…”Notice here that the Scots battle rebels and western invaders for control. Macdomwal’s quest for power causes a great rebellion and ultimately a battle that results in defeat. In Act 5, Scene 4, Lines 19-22, the murderous tale says, “Let our just censures attend the true event, and put we on industrious soldiership.” Macduff gets his armies prepared to attack Macbeth for control Scotland once more. Once again we see that the Scottish army is up against the Malcolm and Macduff/English army because of Macbeth’s reign of terror. In Act 5, Scene 8, Lines 37-39, the act says, “Before my body I throw my warlike shield! Lay on, Macduff, and damn’d be him that first cries....” Macbeth fights Macduff to see who will rule Scotland. Remember that these are the two who struggled for power in the beginning. Now Macduff will make Macbeth “kiss the ground before young Malcolm’s feet.” Major conflicts happen because people want to have power over places, things, and others.
People will kill and do whatever it takes to get into leadership positions. In Act 2, Scene2, Lines 67-72, it says, “Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead are but as pictures. “Tis the eye of childhood that fears a painted devil. If he do bleed, I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal, For it must seem their guilt.” Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that she will do whatever it takes to pin the murder of Duncan on the guards. The only way they will be in control is to frame someone else for their crime. In Act 3, Scene 3, Lines 26- 27, it states, “O, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! Thou mayst revenge.” At this point Macbeth has hired assassins to murder Banquo in fear that he would lose his role as leader. The witch’s prophecy scared him so he had him eliminated.
Roles in government can change with the death of others. In Act 3, Scene 1, Lines 1-2, it reads, “Thou hast it now: King, Cawdor, Glamis, all, as the weird women promised…”Macbeth is now crowned king because Duncan was killed and his heirs fled for their lives. Since he was a good general, he was the most likely to be chosen for the job and he knew that. In Act 5, Scene 8, Lines 76-85, the story states, “As calling home our exiled friends abroad that fled the snares of watchful tyranny, producing forth the cruel ministers of this dead butcher and his fiendlike queen, who, as ’tis thought, by self and violent hands took off her life; this, and what needful else that calls upon us, by the grace of Grace, we will perform in measure, time, and place. So, thanks to all at once and to each one, whom we invite to see us crowned at Scone.” Now that Macduff has slain Macbeth, Malcolm claims the throne as rightful heir. Macbeth’s tyranny will no longer control Scotland, thus changing the government; furthermore, effecting people’s freedoms and how Scotland will operate.
Death and power struggle are two key factors in the impact on the overall drama in Macbeth. In Act 4, Scene 3, it says, “Down with the lady of doom and up with my father's crown…” Since Macbeth killed Duncan and lusted for power, he is now being hunted by Malcolm and Macduff. This means a lot in the last half of the story because it is mainly about how they seek revenge for the death of Duncan. In Act 3, Scene 1, Lines 75-76, it says, “Rather than so, come fate into the list, and champion me to the utterance!” This mindset of Macbeth causes him to do terrible things. Instead of being content, he wants to eliminate anyone in his path that might be an impediment to his kingship, even though they are innocent targets.
Macbeth’s hunger for power got the best of him. What he did to gain power is inexcusable. I challenge you to refrain from actions like this. Killing and injuring others to gain a leadership role is not the right thing to do. You should earn it fair and square without manipulation. Do not do something like Macbeth because ultimately you will pay for your actions; possibly with your life.

Current Connection: 2.1

Margaret Collins provides liable information in her article, "Cost of Dropping Citizenship Keeps U.S. Earners From Exit," that the IRS has taxes and fees in place that essentially trap extremely wealthy people in America.

In the article, Margaret Collins says, "Exit taxes and other costs make it prohibitive for most high-income taxpayers and small-business owners to leave the U.S., though they may want to go because of higher taxes at the federal level and in states such as California." The exit taxes are designed to prevent prevent people who have a lot of money from leaving the U.S.. I am not one of those wealthy people; however, this seems a little unfair to me.

Margaret Collins states in the article, "A high-income couple worth $100 million whose assets have $50 million in gains may have a $10 million tax liability if they decided to leave this year." This theoretical couple has enough money to live luxuriously anywhere in the world; unfortunately, even after that significant amount of money is taken. It still seems wrong to take so much money that they (theoretically) earned and essentially make them pay to a huge some of money just to leave the U.S.

Also stated by Margaret Collins in the article, "If the owner of a limited liability company establishes a foreign corporation conducting business in the U.S., it may have to pay several layers of U.S. income tax. Those include a top 35 percent corporate tax, a 30 percent so-called branch profits tax and as much as 43.4 percent tax on non-qualified dividends distributed to a shareholder, Entin said." This means that if a business is moved out of the U.S. but still conducts within the U.S., then the business will be subjected to much higher taxes than if it had simply remained within the U.S.; this discourages businesses from taking their money elsewhere. No business will want to be here; they cannot survive with taxes choking them wherever they go.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the U.S.'s founding fathers, once said, "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." This is certainly true in this case. The article even mentions that if someone who moved out of the U.S. but still has children here dies, then there are levies similar to the estate tax that the money has to go through before the children can receive the fraction of the money that will be left. The government is an anaconda that strangles companies with taxes and hidden fees.

While millions of illegal immigrants receive amnesty and the benefits paid for by taxpayers, the people who pay for the majority of those benefits are stuck in the country.

Current Connection: 1.2

The Associated Press's article, "Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest donates $62 million to

universities in western state," shows insight and information about how Andrew Forrest is such a
philanthropist towards the betterment of education.

This donation will help many students with college payments. The Press says, "AU$50 million will be used to establish the Forrest Foundation to fund scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships at all five universities in Western Australia state." Many students, the ones who are not smart enough to get a full ride, have loan debts that take years to pay off. Most people eventually get them payed off by the time they are acouple of years into their career. This donation can help get students off to a good start; when students see this act of generosity they will be more inclined to help others as well.

The betterment of society should not go unnoticed. Forrest said in a statement, "Let us all never forget that only education can be the final key to eliminate poverty in the world and raise the universal standard of living, ultimately to increase the nobility of the human cause." Forrest, a 52-year-old entrepreneur who graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1983 with an economics degree, said that Australia should develop a higher-profile philanthropic culture. People need to model their actions after this man; therefore, we are going to have to sacrifice time and money to make things better in our community.

The wealthy people should take action to help those that are less fortunate. The Press says,
"Forrest and his wife Nicola are the first Australians to join "The Giving Pledge" movement founded by Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett, the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. The pledge commits billionaires to donate most of their wealth to charity." More programs like this need to be put into place. These billionaires have so much money they do not even know what to do with it. They can at least share some to help others out in these hard economic times; people love these programs. Anna Draffin, deputy chief executive officer of the charity umbrella group Philanthropy Australia, described the Forrest gift as the largest philanthropic donation from an Australian.

I myself could benefit from these types of programs. Any scholarship money I could get would be ablessing. Forrest's, as well as any other billionaire, donation helps many students all around the world with college costs that some families just cannot afford. Students adore people as generous as this man is.

People need to help their neighbors and fellow man out as much as they can. Being generous and volunteering are great ways to show philanthropy to others. Try to be the best person you can be for society. Improve on what makes us weak and capitalize on what makes us strong. If we all just gave some effort to make things better it would be amazing how much our society would improve.

Current Connection: 1.1

Erin Stevens's thoughtful compassion enables her to reach out to the stripper community and help
lead them to Jesus Christ. The story, "'Strip Church' ministry helps Tennessee exotic dancers shed
their pasts," is told by Joshua Miller.

Erin Stevens, wife of a local preacher, wants to save these women and lead them to better lives. “I just thought that I’ve got to do something,” Stevens told FoxNews.com. “So I felt the Lord say to me, ‘Go feed the strippers.’” Stevens started taking meals to a local strip club, as well as providing counseling and support. I believe this is a wonderful idea; many of these strippers are poor and do not always get to eat every meal. This is a great way to go out into the community and show some benevolence to women who might not feel any.

“I told these girls they may not need God right now in their lives, but they will at one point,” Stevens
said. “We never go in with a Bible and we never go in with a prayer sermon. We don’t try to change
them, we just love them.” This a great first step into helping other women. Strippers, often
prostitutes and substance abusers, are most likely going to avoid someone walking up to them with
a bible. Shoving God down their throat is just going to drive them away. Getting to know them first
hand is an excellent gateway to telling them about God.

“A lot of them have pasts that they can’t get over, so I just say Jesus knows all that you’ve done and
still sees you as 100 percent forgivable,” Stevens said. “His love is unconditional and that seems to
resonate with these girls. I tell them, ‘God sees you as valuable and I see you as valuable.’” Stevens
points to a 23-year-old mother of two who stopped working as a stripper shortly after meeting her last
year as proof that the approach works. The former dancer, whose name is being withheld to protect
her identity, has since quit smoking and now wants to work in law enforcement after completing her
degree in criminal justice. This is clear proof that Stevens's approach is effective. Her approach and
the word of God can really change someones life for the better.

I can really connect to these drug abusive strippers. Ny aunt has fell to drug abuse and it really has effected my family. Hopefully my family, or possibly an outreach program like this, can help her and turn her actions around.

I really admire Erin Stevens and the work she's doing. I hope she, as well as other faithful Christians,
can keep up the good work and spread the gospel.

Bomber Burial

A man that commits such a terrible crime against the United States should not be able to be buried within our country. "An employee at the funeral home trying to find a burial site for the body of Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev tells Fox News that his mother has expressed interest in sending it back to Russia, as cemeteries are refusing to accept the remains." This man should not be allowed to be buried within our country. The Boston bombing is a terrible tragedy and this man has no right to be put in our American soil. "Everyone wants him sent back to Russia," said Peter Stefan, the director of the home, according to NBC News. This man is very smart. If a funeral home even dared to bury this man, there would be dire consequences. The funeral home would probably never get business again, the funeral would be constantly interrupted by protesters, and the gravesite would get destroyed by angry U.S. citizens.
It will be impossible for the family to find a burial site for this man. "Stefan said Monday that he is looking outside of Massachusetts and does not think Russia will take the body." I believe the family needs to just get the body cremated. Nobody where it's buried, it's going to be tampered with. Not many people or even countries want to deal with the problems that this body will cause.
We must get rid of this terrible persons body for good. "The Tsarnaev brothers are accused of carrying out the Boston bombings using pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails, ball bearings and metal shards. The attack killed three people and injured more than 260 others near the marathon's finish line." If buried, his gravesite might be a shrine for other radical Muslims. They could use his actions as fuel for their possible actions. That is why must get rid of his body and forget about what this man did.

Political Concerns In Venezuela

Nicolas Maduro, the new Socialist president of Venezuela, has reportedly won the election by fraud.  Pope Francis says he is "worried about the political unrest in Venezuela." Socialism is a type of government in which one man has all the power, which needs to be stopped because it is usually unstable and erratic. It's not fair to the people of the country especially when people are being cheated out of their votes. Pope Francis urged politicians to "reject any kind of violence." It will be very hard to stop violence since 46% of the people voted for the other candidate. Maduro won by a thin margin and most likely cheated to get several of the votes because he is claimed to be "Chavez's chosen successor."
Justice needs to be served to the people of Venezuela. Just a day prior a top official from Venezuela's electoral council said the audit isn't about "revising" the outcome and warned against "false expectations." This goes to show that there is a strong socialism hold within their government. Some government officials like this are saying they're not even going to take a recount or revision of the votes. The people need to act and get what they deserve. "Official results gave Maduro a 260,000-vote victory of 14.9 million votes cast." From a democratic standpoint, it would be an injustice for the people not to be able to have a recount since this is such a narrow margin of votes. It would have been easy for a socialist party candidate with that kind of political power to manipulate the votes. The person that is inaugurated should be elected by the consent of the governed.

Boy Saves His Mothers Life With CPR

This boy is a great example for young children of all ages. "Police in Richland, Wash., say an 11-year-old boy saved his mother’s life by calling for help and then giving his mother CPR." Kids need to be taught CPR skills from a very young age. CPR has saved many lives. Without his quick reactions, his mother could have died. "The boy came from home from school Friday and found his mother unconscious. He called 911 and began performing CPR, following instructions from the 911 dispatcher." It is important that teachers and 911 dispatchers know what they are doing. People like this might not know as much as this boy and need proper guidance.
It is important that 911 responders are always ready. "Police responded and took over CPR until paramedics from the Richland Fire Department arrived." Situations like this can happen anywhere. Their speed and effectiveness depends if someone will live or die. We need more kids that can do these extrordinary acts. "Paramedics were able to get a pulse and the woman was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland." Kids like this should be awarded for their great acts. More kids would look up to them and try to be better citizens to make their communities a better place.

Twinkies Coming Back

Several months ago, the Hostess snack company went bankrupt. In late November they closed their factories due to struggling finances. Hostess had lost many customers because of other cheaper competitors. The knock-off brands had created snacks that tasted the same, but were cheaper.
It is possible that Twinkies will be on the shelves very soon. Founder Dean Metropoulos said the firm was looking forward to having "America's favorite snacks back on the shelf by this summer." However, this is not as easy said than done. Previously, Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn had predicted the process would be "wild and wooly."
Hostess had also canceled an auction for its Wonder and other major bread brands after no competing offers were made. The final sales of the breads and Hostess snack cakes are set to be approved in bankruptcy court on March 19. Hostess has a great deal of work and bargaining to go through before it is able to come back to the shelves of markets and other good stores.

Abused Child Rapper

In Massachusetts, a 9 year old boy named Luie Rivera Jr. a.k.a. Lil Poopy has launched his rap career in the fourth grade. Many questions have been raised from local authorities about his sexually suggestive rap videos. The videos show the boy slapping a woman's butt, sexual dancing, and praising drug use. Police in Brockton said Sunday they are also informing state child welfare officials about the videos.
Many people are questioning if the child is raised in an abusive home. Lt. David Dickinson told The Enterprise that the videos are "a bit much for a 9-year old." A boy this age should have no part in these videos. This child is obviously being raised in a horrible environment. No parent in their right mind would let their child be in these videos. They are too vulgar and have too much adult content for a child to be in. These videos are poisioning the minds of children and they should not be taken lightly.
Luie's fathers said that he is, "simply acting and not doing anything wrong." This is simply ridiculous. For the sake of the child, he should be removed from this household he is currently being raised in. If he isn't removed, I believe it is highly certain that Luie may end up being a drug addict or salesman. The future of this young boy is at stake. Also, the future of the children who watch his videos are at stake as well. Children's minds at this age can be manipulated very easily, so the enforcement of these videos and their meanings can have a negative influence to this generation of children.

When Coyotes Attack

Last week, a man named Faron Scarberry of Washington, was attacked by three coyotes at his home. He was with his dog in the backyard when the incident occurred."One of them lunged up toward me and I kind of pushed it away with my hand and its front claws scratched my hand and wrists," Scarberry said of the encounter. "Then one of the grabbed me by the pant leg and started shaking my leg so I just started kicking and hitting at them to get them off of me and they ran back under the fence." Luckily, he wasn't hurt bad enough, so he was able to fight them off. Faron had to receive 24 rabies shots in his leg and 2 in his hip.
Coyotes are beginning to become a problem within suburban communities. Much of their habitats have been destroyed due to logging so they come to the suburb to look for food. Coyotes are wild animals and must be treated as such. Even though this is a rare case it could happen to anyone. "I love wildlife," Scarberry told KOMO News, "I like looking out the deck, looking at them. But when they're starting to threaten the animals and people in the neighborhood, it's gone a little bit overboard."
There are several steps you can take to protect yourself from the chances of a coyote attack. Coyotes are scavengers and will look for anything to eat. Putting your trash in a closed container will help a lot with coyote control. Having a good barrier or fence between the wild and your backyard will help as well. Taking these steps will ultimately lower your chances of ever being attacked by a wild pack of coyotes.

William Spengler

A horrible tragedy happened in upstate New York last year. A man named William Spengler, 62, killed 2 firefighters and injured the rest of the firefighters who first responded to a 911 call. Spengler deliberately set fire to his sisters house across the street from his home. Spengler's sister had burned to death during the blaze as well. Luckily an off-duty police officer was nearby to provide cover fire for the firefighters. In the end, Spengler was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
People who are mentally unstable should not be able to own firearms. They have no responsibility whatsoever to be able to use a gun. Many tragedies within our society could have been avoided if these mentally unstable people did not have access to weaponry. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Therefore, thorough background checks should be in order to ensure the safety of our communities.
Ex-convicts should not be able to own a weapon. Spengler was convicted in 1981 of first-degree manslaughter in the death of his grandmother. "I think there are still people that need to be in institutions that are a danger to themselves or others. And this is a classic example," says police chief Pickering. They are a danger to our society especially when they own weaponry that can hurt others. Violence like this can be prevented if people step up to the challenge and recognize who is a threat to our society.
